Rather not face this paperwork alone? Nalenta guides you through it for 129 euros.

Logging in to Mijn Belastingdienst

Go to belastingdienst.nl and log in to Mijn Belastingdienst with your DigiD. No DigiD yet? Apply via digid.nl. Lead time: a few business days.

All heirs may file. In practice the heirs appoint one person who fills in the return for the entire estate. The other heirs sign for agreement in advance.

Steps in the portal

1. Select "Inheritance tax filing"

Under "Erfbelasting" you find the option to start a new filing. You first enter the deceased's personal data and the date of death.

2. Enter the heirs

For each heir enter name, BSN, date of birth and the relationship to the deceased. Based on this the portal automatically computes the right exemption and rate.

3. Enter the estate

Fill in all assets and liabilities:

  • Bank accounts with balance on the date of death
  • Real estate with WOZ value
  • Investments at market value
  • Life insurance with payout
  • Debts including mortgage and outstanding bills

The portal accepts amounts to the cent and runs automatic calculations.

4. Special items

Did the deceased make gifts in the last 180 days? Or were there handgiften never officially recorded? Enter them in the right tab. The portal links them to the right heir.

5. Calculation and review

Based on your input the portal shows the calculated inheritance tax per heir. Review the numbers, compare with your own tally and adjust where needed.

6. Submit

Before submitting, a final summary appears. Confirm and the portal sends the filing directly to the Belastingdienst. Within a few days you receive a confirmation of receipt in your Berichtenbox.

What happens next?

  • Within 4 to 12 weeks: a provisional assessment or follow-up questions;
  • Within 6 to 12 months: the final assessment with the amount due.

From the assessment date you have 6 weeks to pay or to object.

Tip

Print or save each filing page as a PDF for your own records. The Belastingdienst keeps the original, but you will need a copy for follow-up questions or for the second death in a household.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file on paper instead of digitally?

Yes. The paper form is available from the Belastingdienst. Online is faster and gives an instant calculation, but paper remains valid.

What if I want to pause the filing midway?

The portal saves your input. You can return later without starting over, provided you log in within the retention period.
