Step 1: report the death
Notify the death via abnamro.nl/nalatenschap or by phone to the Service Center Nalatenschappen.
Have ready:
- the death certificate;
- the deceased's account number;
- your own ID.
From that point outgoing payments are blocked. Incoming payments still arrive normally.
Step 2: receive the welcome pack
Within 10 business days you receive a welcome pack by post containing:
- an overview of all products the deceased held with ABN AMRO (accounts, investments, mortgages, insurance);
- the balance per product on the date of death;
- the tax certificate you need for the inheritance tax filing;
- a form to register the heirs.
Step 3: provide the documents
For balances above a few thousand euros ABN AMRO asks for:
- a certificate of inheritance or executorship;
- ID for the proxy or all heirs;
- for investments, an instruction to sell or transfer the holdings.
Below the threshold a signed self-declaration is often accepted.
Step 4: mortgage at ABN AMRO?
If the deceased had a mortgage at ABN AMRO, the Service Center automatically checks whether an insurance is attached that pays off (part of) the mortgage. If yes, it is paid out and the mortgage is reduced.
Without insurance, the mortgage continues and the heirs or partner must keep paying or sell the home.
Step 5: choose the destination
Pay out, divide or transfer to the partner. ABN AMRO completes within 5 to 10 business days of receiving the documents.
Tip
ABN AMRO publishes an inheritance brochure on abnamro.nl. It carries the most current threshold amounts and forms. Print it and keep it with your documents.
