Step 1: report the death to Rabobank
Notify Rabobank via the bereavement desk by phone or rabobank.nl. You can also report at your local branch; they forward it.
Have ready:
- the death certificate;
- the account number or IBAN of the deceased;
- your own ID as the reporter.
Rabobank then blocks all accounts in the deceased's name.
Step 2: complete the bereavement form
You receive a Nazorgformulier in which you state:
- who the heirs are;
- whether there is a will;
- whether a certificate of inheritance is forthcoming;
- who acts as proxy for the other heirs.
Step 3: provide the documents
For balances above a few thousand euros Rabobank asks for:
- a certificate of inheritance or executorship;
- ID for all heirs or the proxy;
- the tax certificate of balances as of the date of death (Rabobank provides this themselves).
Below the threshold, a self-declaration plus death certificate often suffices.
Step 4: choose the destination
As with ING, you can pay out, divide between heirs, or transfer a joint account to the partner. Rabobank typically processes the instruction within 5 business days of full documentation.
Investments at Rabobank
If the deceased had an investment account at Rabobank, the holdings are frozen on the date of death. For the inheritance tax filing you need the market value on the date of death. Rabobank includes this overview by default in the bereavement pack.
Local presence
Unlike ING, an in-person meeting at your local Rabobank branch is usually easy to arrange. Use it for complex situations (multiple heirs, international elements, a business). It is free.
